Niftyhelp 2026.10.1-beta.1 Support

Beta This is the help for Nifty 2026.10.1-beta.1, which isn't released yet. Help for the current release

Install on a Mac

Download Nifty for Mac, set it up, and keep it up to date.

On this page

Nifty for Mac keeps your data on your Mac, or opens a Nifty server. It needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later.

Install

  1. Download Nifty's .dmg and open it.
  2. Drag Nifty onto Applications.
  3. Eject the disk image, then open Nifty from your Applications folder.
Note:

Run it from Applications, not from the disk image or Downloads: only then can it update itself.

First run

  1. Choose Get started.
  2. Check your name (it comes from your Mac) and choose Keep my data on this Mac.
  3. When it says All ready to go, choose Take me to Nifty.
  4. Choose Start free trial, or I have a licence key to paste yours (Your licence).

That's it: no password needed. Nifty signs you in by itself each time it opens.

  • To keep your data somewhere else, choose Advanced options in step 2 and pick a folder. A folder that already has Nifty data opens as it was (Open my data).
  • To use a Nifty server instead, choose Use Nifty on a server, type its address and choose Connect. You sign in with the server's username and password.
Tip:

Want Nifty in a browser or on another device too? Set a password in Settings → Sign-in. See Settings.

Updates

Nifty checks for a new version once a day, downloads it in the background, and installs it when you quit.

  • To install it now, choose Nifty → Restart to Update. You come back to the page you were on, and anything you're typing is kept.
  • To check yourself, choose Nifty → Check for Updates….
  • Versions released after your licence's Updates until date aren't installed: Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Updates says so. See When your updates end.
  • Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Updates has Check for updates automatically (on by default) and Beta releases, for new features before they're stable. Turning betas off never takes you back a version.

Change where your data lives

Choose Nifty → Desktop Settings…, then Data. You can switch between this Mac and a server, or pick another folder.

Where things are

What Where
Your data (by default) ~/Library/Application Support/Nifty
The app's own settings ~/Library/Application Support/io.niftyware.desktop

To back it up, see Backups.

Uninstall

Quit Nifty and drag it from Applications to the Bin. Your data stays in its folder until you delete it.
